Spectacles of Arcane Understanding
Aura strong divination; CL 15th
Slot eyes; Price 10,000 gp; Weight

These spectacles grant you an intutitive understanding of magical writing. While wearing them, you are constantly under the effect of read magic.

This item has additional powers useful to arcane spellcasters:

Prepared Arcane Spellcasters: If you use a spellbook to prepare spells (e.g. wizard, magus), you may use the spectacles of arcane understanding to prepare spells from a captured or borrowed spellbook without having to succeed on a Spellcraft check.

If you are any sort of prepared spellcaster (e.g. wizard, witch, magus), you may use the spectacles of arcane understanding to prepare one spell per day from a source of arcane magical writing that you normally could not use. (e.g. a witch could prepare one spell from a wizard’s spellbook; a wizard could prepare one spell from an alchemist’s formula book.) You must make a Spellcraft check (DC 15+spell level) in order to prepare the spell that day; on a failed check, you cannot prepare that spell today, but you may attempt to prepare a different one. The spell is prepared in one of your spell slots, as if the spell were in your spellbook or known by your familiar. Spells prepared in this manner must be on the spell list for your class. If the written spell or formula is of a different spell level than it would be for your class, you use the spell level for your class. You may use a spell prepared through this item as prerequisites for crafting magic items. You may not use the spectacles to directly copy a spell from an alchemist’s formula book into your spellbook or teach a spell to your familiar. However, if you have the Scribe Scroll feat, you may create a scroll of a spell prepared via this item, and then use the scroll to copy the spell into your spellbook or teach it to your familiar normally.

Spontaneous Arcane Spellcasters: If you are a spontaneous spellcaster (e.g. bard, sorcerer), you may use the spectacles of arcane understanding to prepare one spell per day from a magical writing source (such as a spellbook or alchemist’s formula book) into one of your spell slots, as if you were a prepared spellcaster. You must make a Spellcraft check (DC 15+spell level) in order to prepare the spell that day; on a failed check, you cannot prepare that spell today, but you may attempt to prepare a different one. The spell must be on your spell list. If the written spell is of a different spell level than it would be for your class, you use the spell level for your class. You otherwise cast it as if you knew the spell. You may use a spell prepared via this item as prerequisites for crafting magic items.

You must continue to wear the spectacles of arcane understanding to cast the spell prepared by this item. If you remove the spectacles before you cast the spell, you must make a concentration check (DC 15+double spell level) in order to successfully cast it; otherwise you lose the spell.

For all arcane spellcasters, preparing a spell vis this item adds an additional 30 minutes to your regular spell preparation time. You may apply metamagic feats to a spell prepared via this item normally. When casting a spell via this item, you must provide any material components required, even if you have the Eschew Materials feat.

Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, read magic, mnemomic enhancer, creator must be able to cast spells by preparation from magical writings; Cost: 5,000 gp
